This is my 9 year old’s happy place.
To be honest, he’ll try pretty much any sport.
But this is what he comes back to every time. Rugby is his love.
The challenge. The physical exertion. The being part of a team. The tackling. Oh how he loves the tackling. The feeling when he scores a try and knows I’m there sucking up every moment.
And at his team’s end of season awards ceremony, Dan’s commitment was rewarded with the Most Improved Player award by his coaches – and given that one of his coaches is his dad, he probably had to justify earning it that little bit more.
And I think of all those mothers out there whose children are currently competing on the world stage that is the Olympic Games. The emotions they must go through; the overwhelming sense of pride that their loved one is competing at the very highest level and making their nation proud.
Because I know how I feel on the sidelines of a local pitch watching my boy have the time of his life.
And let me tell you, it feels good.
